Academy Welcomes New President

Robertson has taught in the Department of Education of Denison University, a liberal arts college in Granville, Ohio, since 1979. She currently serves as the director for the J.W. Alford Center for Service Learning at Denison. She began her career teaching seventh grade English, where she discovered students achieving at low levels in reading and writing. This led her to extensive study of literacy, particularly within linguistic, cognitive and social frameworks.  She holds a master’s degree in reading and language from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in reading and cognition from The Ohio State University.

The mother of a daughter with severe-to-profound hearing loss, Robertson has researched the relationship between learning a spoken language and literacy achievement and has written articles and two books about listening, language learning and reading, "Literacy and Deafness: Listening and Spoken Language" and “Literacy Learning for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing,” with an introduction by Carol Flexer, Ph.D.

Clarification on Academic Requirement for LSLS Certification

Following the announcement  of the updated academic requirement for LSLS certification last month, the Academy’s certification committee members have provided the following clarification for applicants who intend to apply under earlier (prior to 2012) versions of the LSLS application materials:

Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in audiology, speech-language pathology or education of the deaf may apply using earlier applications (prior to 2012), so long as the applicant meets the mentoring requirement of at least 18 mentored sessions over 3-5 years prior to applying for the LSLS examination.

For LSLS Cert. AVEd applicants, this mentoring requirement was established in 2011 and therefore applicants with a bachelor’s degree may apply for LSLS certification using the 2011 or 2012 applications.

For LSLS Cert AVT applicants, this mentoring requirement was established in 2008 and therefore applicants with a bachelors degree may apply for LSLS certification using the 2008 or subsequent applications.

This clarification aligns with the Board of Director’s intent to place a greater emphasis on the mentoring requirement as a foundation for preparing an applicant in the specialty of listening and spoken language practice. This policy further ensures that applicants for the LSLS certification will have met similar requirements academic and professional preparation and through structured mentored evaluation.
