Urge Your Representatives to Reauthorize EHDI

Just before Congress left for its annual August recess vacation, the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously passed the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act (EHDI) reauthorization legislation, an important initiative that has been a game-changer for children with hearing loss.

This legislation would reauthorize the federal portion of EHDI for the next 5 years. Reps. Brett Guthrie (R-KY) and Lois Capps (D-CA), the original sponsors, are urging congressional leadership to bring this legislation to a vote in front of the entire House of Representatives. Once EHDI passes the House, it will need to be passed by the U.S. Senate and then be signed by the President to be reauthorized.

We need your help to put more pressure on members of Congress to cosponsor this legislation so that congressional leadership can bring it up for a full vote in the House. We are confident this legislation will pass if AG Bell members take action and send a strong message that this legislation is important to us as well as the parents of newborns. Continued federal funding is necessary to ensure that state EHDI programs become fully operational and successful and that they properly link screening programs with diagnosis and early intervention. Thirty Million Words: Building a Child's Brain

Dr. Suskind learned of this thirty million word gap in the course of her work as a cochlear implant surgeon at University of Chicago Medical School and began a new research program along with her sister-in-law, Beth Suskind, to find the best ways to bridge that gap.
