Welcome from Symposium Chair
Welcome to AG Bell’s 2013 Listening and Spoken Language Symposium. This year’s theme is “Delivering Quality Services to Families.” I would like to thank the planning committee for developing a rich program that will invigorate your educational and clinical practice with new strategies and give you a variety of ideas for serving diverse children and their families.
We are pleased to have Dr. Dana Suskind, professor of surgery and pediatrics and director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implantation Program at the University of Chicago, join us for a keynote presentation on Project ASPIRE, which helps to address language disparities for children with hearing loss. Additionally, the leadership of AG Bell and the AG Bell Academy will lead us in a presentation that celebrates our past and embraces the changing paradigm for the future.
The program is designed to give you access to the latest research, technology and practices presented through a variety of perspectives. Topics include embedded coaching, international perspectives and applications of telepractice, apps and multi-media technology for facilitating listening and spoken language development, and spoken and written language assessment.
We are delighted to have the expertise and learn from the experience of Listening and Spoken Language Specialists from around the world, and around the corner. I’m pleased to welcome professionals working in the Los Angeles Unified School District, one of the largest public school systems in the United States with a student body that is culturally and linguistically diverse.
I would like to extend my appreciation to the Symposium’s sponsors and exhibitors for their support, and I encourage you to visit the exhibit area to learn about the latest technology, programs and educational tools instrumental to families and children with hearing loss reaching their full potential through listening and spoken language.
I hope you and your colleagues will also have time to take in some of what cosmopolitan Los Angeles has to offer. We are in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, home to the city’s main attractions and sightseeing opportunities, including arts institutions, sports facilities, notable architecture, and vibrant neighborhoods.
Thank you for coming to the LSL Symposium and enjoy your time in Los Angeles.
